Reservation Deaths Being Investigated

May 27, 2011 –

MAYETTA (May 27):  Joseph H Mattwaoshshe, 70, died last night of a gunshot wound.

Donald D Allen, 64, died last night of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At approximately 8:05 p.m. last night, Jackson County 911 received a call of shots fired at a tribal housing complex located near 150th and K Roads west of Mayetta, Kansas, on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Reservation.

Tribal police and county sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene and were later assisted by Kansas Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies.

Tribal Police are currently investigating the deaths and will work in conjunction with federal, state and BIA authorities while conducting the investigation.

Both Mattwaoshshe and Allen were members of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

Funeral services are still pending at this time.
