Fire Department Reminder to Change Clocks and Smoke Alarm Batteries

October 30, 2009 –

MAYETTA:  The Potawatomi Tribal Fire Department wants to remind everyone to change the batteries in their smoke alarms this weekend when they turn their clocks back one hour back to standard time on Sunday, November 1.

Working smoke alarms provide an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape. This is particularly important for those most at risk of dying in a home fire such as children and older adults. In addition to replacing the batteries make sure and test your smoke alarm by pushing the test button, planning two ways out and practicing those escape routes with the entire family. Make checking your smoke alarms this weekend’s home project!

The Potawatomi Tribal Fire Department, the Fire Education Association of Kansas, and Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office are teaming up to help spread the message that could potentially save lives.
