Awards Ceremony to Announce 1st Quarter Charitable Contributions

MAYETTA: An awards ceremony will be held Thursday, April 8 at 10 a.m. at the Prairie Band Casino & Resort where $86,800 will be distributed to several Topeka organizations and other regional, Native American, and out-of-state non-profit groups by the Tribal Council and Charitable Contributions Committee.  The ceremony will be held in the Prairie du Chien convention center room.

Topeka groups that will be recognized include the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 604 ($9,000), National Alliance on Mental Illness Kansas ($5,000), Family Service & Guidance Center ($5,000), Prairie Land Foods, Inc. ($5,000), Doorstep, Inc. ($5,000) Meals on Wheels ($4,500), Topeka Sertoma Clubs ($3,500), American Cancer Society ($2,500), Sunflower State Games ($2,500), Boys & Girls Club, ($2,000), Topeka Community Foundation (TCF) ($2,000), Chesney Park Summer Youth Program/TCF ($1,000), Topeka Parks & Recreation Foundation ($1,000), YWCA ($1,000) and the Alzheimers Association ($1,000).

Native American organizations include the National Indian Child Welfare Association ($10,000), Kah-Bay-Kah-Nong, Inc. ($2,000), Kansas Indian Basketball Assoc. ($1,000), Haskell Indian Nations University Spring Commencement Pow-wow Committee ($2,000), Stories-N-Motion Film Festival ($1,000) Brown Co. Native American Church Chapter ($2,000), Indian Youth of America ($1,300), Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame, Inc. ($500), and Kickapoo Head Start ($1,000).

The Charitable Contributions Committee is comprised of five tribal members, who along with the Tribal Council selected 31 organizations to receive the 1st quarter distribution.   Areas that are focused on when determining the distribution of funds include groups involved in education, health and community services, environmental protection and preservation, and religious organizations that have an impact on the spiritual wellness and quality of life for all.
