19th Annual Potawatomi Gathering Coming Up

MAYETTA:  The Gathering of Potawatomi Nations will be held Aug.8 through Aug.11 and  is hosted this year by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi.

The Gathering will be held on Pokagan land at its Rodgers Lake property which is in the heart of ancestral Potawatomi homelands.  According to www.potawatominations.com the Gathering will provide an opportunity for Bodewadmi people from across North America to come together for language and cultural demonstrations, recreational activities, meals, socializing, and a pow wow. Business meetings will be held among the heads of the nine Potawatomi bands and other issues and items will be shared and discussed.

Thousands of Potawatomi people gather each year and have been coming together for almost twenty years.  Through the years the Gatherings hav been expanded to include a multi-day language conference and a youth conference that includes several activities for the young.

Several members of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation plan to attend including the Tribal Council, We-Ta-Se American Legion Post #410, Language and Cultural staff, and other support staff from Road & Bridge and Tribal Emergency Services.

The Prairie Band elder bus (already full) plans to leave from the Bingo Hall on Aug. 4 and will return home Aug. 12.
