Mission

Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation General Public Transportation strives to encourage the improvement, efficiency, and use of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Public Transit system within the Reservation and Jackson County in order to enhance access of employment, health care, recreation and public services for the general public of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Reservation and Jackson County.


Policy

It is the policy of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Public Transit to provide the most effective, efficient, safest and uninterrupted transportation service to all the residents of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Reservation and Jackson County.


Services

Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Transit provides transportation service to all residents of the Reservation/County with three (3) wheelchair lift mini vans, which provides specialized transportation needs and one back up twelve (12) passenger vehicle.

Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Transit transports the public for medical, nutrition, recreation and employment-related activities. The vehicles are each equipped with cellular telephones for dispatching as well as providing emergency communication in inclement weather or where the need arises.

Scheduling Information and Fares

  • It is preferred all riders call at least 24 hours in advance to schedule transportation
  • All riders are based on “First Come First Serve” basis
  • Departure times are dependent on rider-ship demand and inclement weather
  • All departure times are subject to change without notice. Unscheduled additional stops are 50 cents per stop if not scheduled at the time of original request for transportation.
  • Local area fares are 50 cents for ages 6 years and up each way and 30 cents for elders 60 years and up; Local destinations include the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Reservation and within the town of Mayetta.
  •  Long distance fares are $1.00 each way for ages 6 years and up each way and 60 cents for elders 60 years and up; Long distance cities are as follows:
    • Holton
    • Topeka
    • Hoyt
    • Dennison
  • Personal attendants who ride with the passenger who needs assistance will not be charged
  • Special trips are $5.00 each way for medical appointments-Horton, Lawrence depending on availability 
  • On Federal holidays our offices will be closed
  • During Inclement weather the bus may not be operation due to hazardous road conditions.

Ridership

  1. Outside the extended area will be considered special trips on a "first come first serve" basis of availability,  i.e. medical appointments to Holton or Topeka.
  2. Outside the extended area requesting transportation to JacksonCounty or to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Reservation will be based on availability and on a "first come first serve" basis.
  3. All riders shall be paying customers as outlined on the route and fee schedule.
  4. Children under the age of 18, must be accompanied by an adult, unless a parent waiver is signed by the transit dispatcher, parents or consenting adult prior to scheduled ride.
  5. No child under the age of 6 is permitted to ride alone or left unattended with the driver.
  6. For children ages 7 and under are required to be in car seats or boosters provided by the parent or guardian.
  7. All riders shall wear a seat belt as required by law.
  8. Absolutely no smoking, alcohol beverages, concealed firearms or ammunition on the vehicle.
  9. No hazardous, combustible chemicals or flammable chemicals allowed at any time.
  10. The driver will refuse transportation to a person who is obviously intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. After taking such an action, the driver shall notify the dispatcher of the incident.
  11. The driver reserves the right to remove any passenger who presents a danger to other riders/potential riders. These include but are not limited to: intoxication, fighting, arguing, and threatening the driver or fellow passengers, use of foul language, and sexual harassment will not be tolerated and ridership may be suspended.
  12. Inappropriate behavior from passengers/potential passengers to any driver or transit program employee will not be tolerated. This will include any phone contact, including screaming, cussing or rude behavior, as well as gestures by passenger/potential passengers. Persistent inappropriate and or dangerous behavior may cause ridership to be suspended
    1. Disciplinary Procedures
      1. If the rider does not follow all guidelines they will receive disciplinary procedures, which may result in suspension from riding privileges. The program manager may suspend any passenger without prior warnings immediately if necessary and without giving any other notices for no call, no shows or other incidents.  
        1. First offense – rider will receive a verbal/written warning from the driver.
        2. Second offense – rider will receive a written notice from the manager stating the next offense the rider will be suspended from Transit.
        3. Third offense – rider will be notified by the manager that they have been suspended for a (30) thirty-day period.
  13. The driver is responsible for collecting fares, tickets and logging passengers who are unable to pay.
  14. Drivers will assist the elder and handicapped passengers if necessary as they enter and exit the vehicle.
  15. Passengers who continue to violate any policy will be subject to suspension or permanent revocation of transportation privileges.
  16. Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation does not provide daily school bus service.
  17. Only service animals will be permitted to ride on the bus.
  18. Limit packages to no more than what the rider can carry and not to take up space, shopping bags should be no bigger than a luggage case.

Pick-up and Delivery Procedures

  1. The driver shall greet passengers as they board.
  2. Pick-up service on a residential street shall be on the right hand curb in front of the passenger’s residence. The driver may pull into a driveway if it is accessible for the vehicle to safely back out to oncoming traffic.
  3. Horn will be sounded once upon reaching pick-up point, unless passenger has appeared. If the passenger has not appeared within 2 to 3 minutes of the 5-minute window, driver will proceed to next destination noting this as a no-show.
  4. In the event a passenger is a no-call, no-show, the driver will notify the dispatcher. When the dispatcher sets up transportation for a no-call, no-show passenger, the dispatcher will inform the passenger of the previous no-call, no-show and inform them that the next no-show will be deemed for suspension of ridership.
  5. Vehicle will not be sent back once in route on all regularly scheduled routes.
  6. Services may be revised as warranted in order to provide the safety transportation to the general public and the department.
